S.A.F.E. (Safe Alternative for Everyone) was created on January
21, 2006 by a group of well established SIU students, local bar owners, and influential members of the local community. It
is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Carbondale, IL. This organization realizes drunk driving is a serious
issue in the city of Carbondale. In order to make this a safer community we devised a plan to help get drunk drivers off the
street. We realize we can’t stop students from drinking and driving completely so the organization wants to offer students
a choice or safe alternative. This alternative is a bus called the Twinkie, which stops at locations around campus and it
takes students safely to and from the local bars on the weekends.
Our
Mission
The S.A.F.E. organization was established
by a group of students who feel drunk driving in Carbondale is a huge problem. The introduction of a new service called “The
Twinkie” will provide students with a safer alternative of getting to and from the bars. With the help of local bar
owners, community officials, and other students we hope to make Carbondale a safer community for everyone involved. While
we cannot stop students from drinking and driving completely we want to offer them the education and option to make the right
choice. By doing this we hope to improve the image of Carbondale and of the SIU campus.

SIU Students Support the Twinkie
Twinkie makes it
debut during welcome week at SIU
SIU students along with community members and local bar owners joined together to
create a service to get drunk drivers off the streets. This is a free transportation service called “The Twinkie”.
The Twinkie makes its debut today and students are encouraged to come out and learn more about the bus. They can also participate
in the “Tag It” promotion.
The bus will be parked in the parking lot next to the Fahner Parking garage.
Students are welcome to stop by the table and pick up information about the bus. Students can register to win lots of great
prizes and they will receive tons of freebies. For only one dollar students can write their name on the bus. This is part
of the “Tag It” promotion which is to help raise money for maintenance of the bus.
Drunk driving among
students is a major problem in the Carbondale area. The S.A.F.E. (Safe Alternative for Everyone) organization was developed
in January 2006 with the idea that while you can’t get students to stop drinking driving completely, providing them
with a safe choice will help keep the majority off the streets.
Other events to promote the Twinkie will take place
during the first 2 months of school. The Twinkie is free to all SIU students with an ID and it runs every Thursday through
Saturday 9pm-3am. For location of stops and other information log onto www.ourwebsite.com
